Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

    • On this day in 1906: The San Francisco Board of Education issued an order requiring the city’s 93 Japanese children to attend segregated schools already established for Chinese students. The resulting diplomatic uproar prompted then-President Theodore Roosevelt to work out a “Gentleman’s Agreement” in which the school board rescinded the order in exchange for Japan’s promise to deny visas to its laborers seeking to immigrate to the U.S.
    • In 1922: Alaska Davidson became the first female special agent of the FBI, then known as the Bureau of Investigation. She was assigned to the Washington, D.C., office at a salary of $7 a day plus $4 when traveling. Two years later, the agency’s new director, J. Edgar Hoover, asked her to resign. It would be almost 50 years until women would again join the FBI.

    • In 1968: NASA launched Apollo 7, the first successful crewed Apollo mission, with astronauts Walter Schirra Jr., Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham on board – none of whom ever flew in space again.
    • In 1971: John Lennon’s iconic song “Imagine” was released, becoming an anthem for anti-war movements. It remains one of Lennon’s most celebrated solo works.
    • In 1975: The first-ever live broadcast of the iconic American TV show “Saturday Night Live” aired on NBC with George Carlin as host. Since then, SNL has claimed 93 Emmy Awards and helped launch the careers of many well-known entertainers.
