For a second-year coach, Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham is well compensated, but he still isn't among the elites in the Big 12.

USA Today published its annual head football coaching salary report which indicates Dillingham's $3.95 million annual salary is 12th out of the 15 conference coaches, whose salary are public record. As a private institution, Brigham Young does not have to make that public.

The report includes the most overpaid and most underpaid coaches across the country.

Highest on the Big 12 list is Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, who is at $7.75 million, followed closely by Utah's Kyle Whittingham at $6.52 million. Both those coaches have been the head coach at their respective schools for 20 years. That's tied for the second-longest tenure in the NCAA behind Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, who is in his 26th year and taking home $7 million yearly.

Dillingham has several peers not far in front of him on the pay scale. That group includes Texas Tech's Joey McGuire ($4.20 million), Central Florida's Gus Malzahn ($4 million), West Virginia's Neal Brown ($4 million), and Iowa State's Matt Campbell ($4 million).

The lowest salary in the conference belongs to Arizona's Brent Brennan at $2.70 million. He is in his first season in the Arizona program after coming from San Jose State late in the offseason.

Dillingham, then 32, was hired in November of 2022 at an initial base salary of $3.85 million per year. His contract stipulates an annual increase of $100,000 with that raise coming each November, the first of those last November. His contract runs through November 2027.

The top-paid coaches in the nation include Georgia's Kirby Smart ($13 million), Clemson's Dabo Sweeney ($11,0008,575), Texas' Steve Sarkisian ($10.6 million), USC's Lincoln Riley ($10,043,418), Alabama's Kalen DeBoer ($10 million), Florida State's Mike Norvell ($10 million) and Ohio State's Ryan Day ($9,946,250).

Those are base salaries and don't include bonuses or incentives.

The Sun Devils went 3-9 in Dillingham's inaugural season with the team slowed by a slew of injuries and NCAA sanctions courtesy of recruiting violations of the previous regime. This year's team is off to a 5-1 start, which includes a 27-19 upset of Utah on Friday for the signature win in the young Dillingham tenure.

ASU plays at Cincinnati on Saturday .
