10th Annual Backpack Giveaway and Festival Set to Support Pasadena Students
The 10th Annual Backpack Giveaway and Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3 in Pasadena, is preparing to provide essential school supplies to local students. The event, organized by former City Council candidate and current Rental Housing Board Vice Chair Brandon D. Lamar and the Neighborhood Survants, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 135 Glorieta St. It aims to distribute 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students ranging from elementary to college age.

Monterey Park’s New Solid Waste Contracts
At the March 26, 2024, council meeting, the Monterey Park City Council awarded an exclusive franchise contract for residential waste collection and recycling services to Ware Disposal. They gave non-exclusive franchise contracts for commercial waste collection and recycling services to both Ware Disposal and Athens Services. The new contracts will go into effect September 1, 2024 and terminate on August 31, 2031.

Men’s Basketball’s Hinton Wins Silver at William Jones Cup
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Men's Basketball incoming first-year Robert Hinton earned a silver medal while playing for the Chinese Taipei Blue Team, at the 2024 William Jones Cup in New Taipei, Taiwan. The tournament was held at Xinzhuang Gymnasium from July 13-21. A guard from Los Angeles, California, Hinton averaged a team-high 13.4 points on 54 percent shooting, including 44 percent from three-point range, and 81 percent from the charity stripe. Hinton also added 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 steals over eight games at the tournament.

LA Metro’s Ridership Continues Upward Trend in June for 19th Month in a Row
In June, LA Metro saw its 19th consecutive month of year-over-year ridership growth with 25,181,475 boardings on its bus and rail services, reaching 85.5 percent of its June 2019 pre-COVID ridership level. With 18,792,300 boardings on weekdays, ridership reached 82.1 percent of its pre-pandemic levels. Weekends in June saw 6,389,175 boardings, reaching 97.7 percent of pre-pandemic weekend ridership from June 2019.
