Ground was broken at the Miller Creek Community housing project on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024, to celebrate the construction of a new affordable housing community that will offer 40 low-income families the stability and long-term equity that homeownership provides.

The project features 3 and 4-bedroom, 1.5-bath homes that are approximately 1,250 square feet.

A playground will also be installed, offering the children of the community a central place to learn, play, and thrive.

Water, sewer, power, curbs, and gutters have been installed in the location over the past two years.

Tuesday’s groundbreaking marked the day that vertical building began at Miller Creek, with hopes of filling the homes with families by Summer 2025.

The Miller Creek Community is part of the Habitat Land Trust. The Land Trust’s purpose is to secure permanent affordability for families in an area with an average home price over $850,000. Projects like Miller Creek ensure that working individuals and families can build their lives and thrive in King County.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Representative of the 7th District, King County Executive Dow Constantine, and Burien Mayor Kevin Schilling made remarks at the ceremony, emphasizing the project’s importance to the community in a harsh economic climate.

The attendees also heard from Habitat Homebuyer Racquael G., who relayed her personal story of what this affordable housing project means for her and her son.
