If you've just decided to grow your family, the whole TTC period (that is, trying to conceive) can be pretty exciting — as well as full of unknowns. When will you get pregnant? And when would your baby actually arrive?

All things equal, the odds are that you'll have a summer baby, as August is the most popular birthday month, followed by July, per the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data collected in 2023. Here's more about which months have the most (and the least) birthdays .

    The most common birthday months

Month Number of U.S. births in 2023
    August 322,359
    July 311,595
    October 309,117
    September 305,511
    June 303,321
    May 299,543
    January 299,465
    March 299,356
    November 298,039
    December 298,039
    April 278,629
    February 270,844

Summer birthdays reign supreme in the U.S. August takes the top spot as the most common birthday month, with more than 322,000 births. (That's a lot of Virgos and Leos!) July comes in second place with about 311,000 new babies — meaning more than 10,000 little ones arrive each day in the summer.

If you count backwards nine months, that makes October and November the most popular times to conceive . Researchers theorize that seasonal factors (like temperature, humidity and vitamin D exposure), plus cultural factors (such as the holiday season and spending more time indoors) play a part here.

Overall, more babies are born in the second half of the year than the first, as October and September clock in at third and fourth place, respectively.

What is the least common birthday month?

Unsurprisingly, February is the shortest and therefore least common birthday month, as it contains only 28 days (or 29 during a leap year ). Only 270,844 babies arrived in February 2023. (Provisional data from the CDC shows that this most recent February, which included a leap year day, had an extra 10,000 babies!)

April, which only has 30 days, is the second rarest month — so if you have a due date in February or April, consider yourself part of an exclusive club.

    Key Takeaways

    • August is the most popular birthday month in the U.S.

    • July and October round out the top three spots.

    • You're least likely to give birth in February, which is the rarest birthday month.
