Justin and Hailey Bieber welcomed their baby boy to the world last week. And their son’s name, Jack Blues Bieber, captures both ends of the baby name spectrum – it's both popular and unique.

Outside of the celebrity baby name sphere, it's not unusual to see a traditional first name paired with a unique middle name, since parents often feel like they can get more creative with a middle name. Here's what we know about the new Bieber's name.

    Jack is a perennial favorite

It's been among the top 100 boy names for almost as long as the Social Security Administration has kept track, starting in 1880. The name briefly fell out of the top 100 from 1965 until its return in 1996 (though even then, Jack never ranked below No. 177).

Since rejoining the top 100, Jack has been more popular than ever, reaching an all-time high of No. 13 in 2021, per BabyCenter baby names data. It's fallen a little bit since then, currently ranking No. 25 – though we wouldn't be surprised if Jack Bieber puts this name back on track toward the top 10.

Though Jack has long been considered a standalone name, it was originally a nickname for John, one of the all-time most popular names in the United States. Rooted in Hebrew, it means "God is gracious."

Jack fits right in with some of the biggest baby name trends we've seen in recent years. Traditional names are coming back – names that were popular 100 years ago , like Henry and Theodore , have been rising steadily in recent years.

Short and sweet boy names are also big right now: All but two of the current top 10 names have five or fewer letters.

The name also has special significance to the Bieber family

Jack might be named after Justin's dad, Jeremy Jack Bieber. And it looks like giving babies names that start with J is a Bieber family tradition . Two of Justin's siblings also have J-names: Jazmyn and Jaxon.

Blues, on the other hand, is one-of-a-kind – it's never ranked among the top 1,000 baby names according to the Social Security Administration, and no BabyCenter parent has ever used it as a first name.

While Blues could fit right in among other popular color names (a popular trend thanks to fellow celebrity baby Blue Ivy Carter), it also has a musical meaning – fitting, for the son of a musician.

The music genre known as the blues has been a part of African American culture since at least the 1890s, though the first record of the word in reference to music isn't until the 1910s. Its name may come from "blue notes," a musical term for when a note is played slightly lower than expected – a common theme in blues music.
