Friends and readers of the Plainsman Herald, the lone newspaper in Baca County based out of Springfield, Colorado received bittersweet news this week as the publication announced it would cease its print edition by the end of 2024. This decision marks the end of a storied 137-year run for the weekly newspaper that began as the Springfield Herald in 1887.
A Call to Action from the Publisher: The Times, They are a-Changing
On a single day this past week three local and long-established newspapers in eastern Colorado announced they were no longer printing their weekly newspaper as the ever-growing costs were monumental, particularly for printing and distribution. After more than a century of informing the citizens in eastern Colorado—particularly in Baca County, Prowers County, and Kit Carson County—those voices are going silent. That’s a damn big deal for the people out here in the rural area of Colorado because losing a newspaper means the citizens are no longer informed. The citizens no longer have a voice. After last week, we are the only independent, local newspaper being printed in a vast geographic news desert.
