I understand fireworks, but my dog doesn't

I saw a racoon in our front yard last week. My guess is that it was too scared to forage during the night because of the sound of fireworks. Our dog shakes and refuses to go outside to relieve herself when fireworks are going off, even in the distance.

I grew up in another country, where the emphasis was on the beauty of fireworks without the extreme explosive features. I understand that the local fireworks bring money to the community, and that the loud ones are part of the American entertainment culture. However, it's undeniable that the loud fireworks cause distress to our wildlife and pets, with whom we share this planet.

I applaud Bainbridge Island for banning them.
