Unlocking the archive: Paint Valley hosted its first football game on its own field in 1960

It was 1960 and Paint Valley was hosting Circleville in the season opener.

It was also the school's first football game on their own field and only their second year of organized play.

The Chillicothe Gazette on Sept 8, 1960, reported that despite being undermanned, Coach Dan Klips was looking for the upset.

"But Klips feels his 19-man squad has real desire - a liking for the rough aspects of the game and an eagerness to pile still more victories onto last year's."

The starting lineup for the Bearcats was Dane Knapp and Paul Martin at the ends; Jerry Knott and Jim Hoffman at tackles; Butch Yochum and Denny Chapman at guards; Mike Shoemaker over center; Mac Stevens and John Depoy at the halfbacks and Ralph Scott at fullback.

On defense, Jack Kinnamon and Ron Cooper were slated for the touch line-backing assignments.

Unfortunately, the upset wasn't meant to be as Circleville won the contest 46-20.

To get you ready for the upcoming high school football season, the Chillicothe Gazette will be publishing photo galleries from past seasons of our local teams. While this week is Paint Valley, the previous weeks featured Huntington and Waverly.
