There’s only one way to safely, legally use fireworks in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — If buying fireworks this year, you should be looking for ones with the “Safe and Sane” seal on them.

The Highland High School fireworks stand on Fairfax Road and Auburn Street sells plenty of safe and legal options.

“This is almost like a finale and this is a new firework we have, and it’s only $30 and it lasts three minutes. So this one actually gives you a long show,” said Monique McNitt with Highland High School Athletics Booster Club.

Having fun and following the law can go hand in hand.

“If it doesn’t have the ‘Safe and Sane’ logo on it, it shouldn’t be used,” said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Albertson with the Bakersfield Fire Department. “It should be disposed of properly through the fire department.”

Those “safe and sane” fireworks can help prevent fires, keep you safe, and protect what’s in your wallet.

“The violation is a citation, the citation carries a $1,500 fee or fine with it,” Albertson said.

The Kern County Fire Department will also be patrolling the skies with drones to be on the lookout for fireworks. KCFD is doing it for the third consecutive year. Last year the department received almost 6,000 reports and responded to just under 400 emergency incidents.

But back at Highland’s fireworks stand, it’s all about raising funds for the Athletics Booster Club while being safe.

“We have price range from $50 all the way to $110,” said Monique McNitt. “If you want to splurge some more, we have some larger packs.”

“Everything here is legal, Safe and Sane, we don’t have anything that is going to get you a ticket”

The Highland High School plans to stay open until they sell out on 4th of July day.
