BAKERSFIELD, Calif (KGET) — Startled awake by screams to open the door, the woman listened as Ryan Clagg followed up his yelling with odd statements, telling her “the government gas us” and “we’re saved by god,” according to court filings.

When she refused to open up, Clagg, her roommate, tore the screen door off its hinges and assaulted her, the woman told police.

Before he was taken into custody, Clagg twice choked the roommate — nearly causing her to lose consciousness –and gouged the eye of a woman who came to her aid, according to the documents.

A 911 caller reported Clagg was possibly under the influence of PCP, a hallucinogenic drug commonly referred to as angel dust.

This week, a judge ordered Clagg, 31, to stand trial on charges of attempted murder, mayhem, assault and battery. He’s being held on $600,000 bail.

The charges stem from an attack the morning of June 19 on Whitlock Street, east of Union Avenue and south of East California Avenue.

Police arrived to find Clagg assaulting a woman, according to the filings. They placed the heavily-bleeding Clagg in ankle and leg restraints and a spit mask, and got medical aid for him and the women.

While getting stitches at Kern Medical, Clagg said he’d been hit in the head with a machete. There’s no further information in the reports on how he became injured.

The roommate told police Clagg forced his way into the apartment and chased her to the back yard, where he wrapped a forearm around her neck and choked her. She said he told her he loved her and made a crude remark as he strangled her.

She and Clagg never had a romantic relationship, she told police.

The roommate managed to break free. She ran but tripped and fell in the driveway.

Clagg tackled and again choked her to the point she “felt as though she was about to lose consciousness and die,” she told police.

A friend of the roommate pulled Clagg off her, she said according to the documents. Clagg then chased the friend. When police arrived, he was holding her against a trailer while assaulting her, documents said.

The friend’s left eye was purple and had begun to swell, according to the documents. She told police Clagg pulled her hair and gouged her eye with his thumb.

Clagg has multiple prior criminal cases listed against him in Kern County. He has convictions for assault on a peace officer, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, burglary and allowing or causing injury to an elder or dependent adult, court records show.
