BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The city is set to launch a pilot program that will bring smart solar-powered trash cans in an effort to keep Downtown Bakersfield looking clean for residents and visitors.

Mobile Bigbelly trash compactors and Modular Trash and Recycling bins can collect up to 150 gallons of trash — four times that of traditional bins — and its compaction system is powered by solar energy.

The Bigbelly trash compactors and recycling bins are scheduled to be installed Monday at the following intersections:

    • Truxtun and Chester avenues
    • 18th Street and Chester Avenue (recycling bin only)
    • E. 19th Street between Baker and King streets (recycling bin only)
    • 19th and Eye streets
    • 20th and H streets

Opening the new trash cans will require almost no effort. You will be able to activate the door through a foot pedal for hands-free opening. Bakersfield Solid Waste staff will check how much trash is in each receptacle, its performance and collection status through Bigbelly’s “Clean Connected Technology.”

Aside from beautifying downtown, the enclosed receptacles will also help keep insects and transients away, according to city officials.

After a four-month trial run, officials will decide whether to expand the program. The project came to life through the Kern County Illegal Dumping Fund.
