    Man struck, killed after running across Hwy 178: CHP

    BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man is dead after running across lanes on westbound Highway 178 Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    CHP says the crash was reported around 9:04 p.m. after a Nissan struck the man, 61, within the number one lane of westbound Highway 178, at about 70 mph. The driver of the Nissan was unable to avoid the crash and the front of the vehicle struck the pedestrian.

    The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. His identity will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office at a later date.

    Highway patrol officials say the use of alcohol and drugs as a factor in this crash is being investigated.
