BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — It was the shocking moment no one saw coming – an attempt on former president Donald Trump’s life at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Now, notable figures here in Kern County and Bakersfield and representatives throughout California are taking to social media for commentary.

Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy expressed his support on social media by posting on X, “I’m praying for President Trump. I hope everyone will join me.”

Mike Boudreaux, former candidate for California’s 20th Congressional District, also posted on Facebook and Instagram, saying the attack and attempted assassination of President Trump is “an attack on us all. Let us pray for the innocent people who were injured and for the families of those who lost their lives amid this senseless violence…”

Senator Shannon Grove also commented, posting on X, Facebook and Instagram, “This photo says all you need to know about President Trump—a fighter for America even in the midst of being attacked. I am praying for him and anyone that has been hurt or affected by this heinous act today.”

The local reaction continued with officials here in Bakersfield. Mayor Karen Goh posted a picture of an American flag on X, Facebook and Instagram, saying, “Praying for our country.”

David Couch, Chairman of the Kern County Board of Supervisors, posted a photo of a hat depicting the violent scene on Facebook, saying, “Any questions?”

On the state level, Governor Gavin Newsom posted on X, “Violence has NO place in our democracy. My thoughts are with President Trump and everyone impacted at the rally today.”

Representative Adam Schiff, who is in the race for California’s senate, also posted on X, “Horrified by this apparent assassination attempt. There is no place for political violence in our democracy. Absolutely none… Wishing President Trump a swift recovery.”

Steve Garvey, also in the race for the Senate, posted on X, “My thoughts and prayers are with President Trump for a speedy recovery and with the families of the innocent rally supporters who were tragically affected.”
