Both sides rest, closing arguments scheduled Wednesday in trial over CDCR counselor’s death

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Both sides rested Friday in the trial of two men charged with murder in the death of a prison counselor, and closing arguments are set to be delivered next week.

The jury has heard all evidence in the trial of Robert Pernell Roberts and Sebastian Parra — and on Wednesday will hear attorneys’ final remarks.

Prosecutor John Allen says the defendants killed Benny Alcala Jr., 43, during an attempted robbery as Alcala charged an electric vehicle the night of Aug. 24, 2022.

The attorneys representing the defendants — Timothy Hennessy for Parra, Deputy Public Defender Gordon Lake for Roberts — each blame the other defendant for the killing.
