Morinaga America Foods, Inc. confirms it will expand operations in Orange County and investment $136 million. The move will create 204 jobs in Mebane.The Japanese company established its American subsidiary in 2013 and chose North Carolina for its first manufacturing site outside of Asia.The Mebane facility opened in 2015 and produces one of the company's signature products, the fruity candy HI-CHEW. Morinaga says demand for its most popular candy is driving the need for expansion. UNC System awards $29 million to expand nursing education at UNCW and 11 other universities
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The UNC System is awarding almost $29 million in grants to expand nursing education at 12 universities and NC’s Area Health Education Centers. “Like many states across the country, North Carolina is coping with an alarming drop in nursing professionals. The state is projected to have a shortage of up to 18,600 registered nurses over the next decade, a major challenge for health care providers and an aging patient population, according to an analysis by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Sheps Center for Health Services Research,” a UNC System announcement states.

Johnson City Police Department encourages autism awareness with challenge coin
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WCYB) — The Johnson City Police Department has teamed up with The Arc Washington County to develop a challenge coin to promote autism awareness. The coin is called the "Bear-rier Breaker." The bear, pictured on one side of the coin, symbolizes courage, protection and wisdom. The son of an officer helped design the coin.

JC Salvation Army announce changes to services
The Salvation Army of Johnson City just announced changes to the services it provides. The organization is ending its day center and free dinner service and snack bags offered to the community. Salvation Army officials say the changes are due to safety, staffing, and funding, with a plan to shift those resources to the shelter. The Salvation Army provides a shelter for those in need of housing, with a capacity of 55, with officials saying the shelter is a part of the organization they need to focus on. The dinner and snack bag service is set to end on July 17. The Johnson City Salvation Army is also working on a veterans wing to the shelter, which would add 15 rooms for homeless military veterans.
