A Michigan man changed his lottery routine and quickly hit it big on scratch-offs, lottery officials said.

The 80-year-old Lake County man won $300,000 on a Top Secret Cashword scratch-off just days after switching from draw games to instant games, according to a July 1 news release from Michigan Lottery Connect.

“I used to only play draw games,” the winner, who chose to remain anonymous, told lottery officials. “It was about a week and a half after I made the switch to playing instant games that I bought this ticket.”

The player said when he revealed his 10th word for the top prize, he was in disbelief, according to lottery officials.

“This can’t be,” the winner said he thought to himself.

After looking his ticket over three times, he gave it to his daughter to confirm the win, he told lottery officials.

“Dad, you won the big one!” she said.

Still in disbelief, the winner said he brought his ticket to be scanned.

“That’s when it started sinking in that I’d really won,” he said. “Winning a $300,000 lottery prize is the best feeling in the world!”

The man bought his ticket at Wolf Lake Store in Baldwin, lottery officials said.

Baldwin is about an 85-mile drive north from Grand Rapids.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
