    54.91% of state legislators are Republican, 44.27% Democratic

    At the end of July 2024, Republicans controlled 54.91% of all state legislative seats nationally, while Democrats held 44.27%.

    Republicans held a majority in 56 chambers, and Democrats held the majority in 41 chambers. Two chambers (Alaska House and Alaska Senate) were organized under multipartisan, power-sharing coalitions.

    Democrats hold 846 state Senate seats and 2,424 state House seats, overall seven fewer seats since last month. Republicans hold 1,114 state Senate seats and 2,942 state House seats, overall four fewer seats.

    Independent or third-party legislators hold 24 seats across ten different states, including 20 state House seats and four state Senate seats. There are 27 vacant state House seats and nine vacant state Senate seats across 16 different states.

    Compared to July 2023, Democrats have five fewer state Senate seats (851 v. 846) and have four more state House seats (2,424 v. 2,420). Republicans have five more state Senate seats (1,114 v. 1,109) and one fewer state House seat (2,943 v. 2,942).
