    54.85% of state legislators are Republican, 44.25% are Democratic

    At the end of August 2024, 54.85% of all state legislators in the United States are Republican while 44.25% are Democratic. There are 7,386 state legislative seats in the country.

    Republicans control 56 chambers, while Democrats hold 41. Two chambers (Alaska House and Alaska Senate) are organized under multipartisan, power-sharing coalitions.

    Democrats hold 844 state Senate seats and 2,424 state House seats, losing 2 state Senate seats since last month. Republicans hold 1,113 state Senate seats and 2,938 state House seats, losing 1 state Senate seat and 4 state House seats since last month.

    Independent or third-party legislators hold 23 seats across 10 different states, including 19 state House seats and 4 state Senate seats. There are 32 vacant state House seats and 12 vacant state Senate seats across 22 different states.

    Compared to August 2024, Democrats have lost seven state Senate seats (851 v. 844) and 0 state House seats (2,424 v. 2,424). Republicans have gained five state Senate seats (1,108 v. 1,113) and lost three state House seats (2,941 v. 2,938).
