Cascade PBS’s Mai Hoang wrote, “This time [Sessler] gained considerable momentum with numerous endorsements, including from the Washington State Republican Party, several county Republican parties, the House Freedom Caucus, … and Trump himself.” For Newhouse, National Republican Congressional Committee representative Ben Peterson said their policy is to support incumbents in races between two Republicans. Newhouse is one of two remaining Republicans in Congress who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump (R).

Voters in Nebraska will decide on a veto referendum regarding a private education scholarship program on Nov. 5, 2024. On Sept. 5, 2024, Secretary of State Bob Evnen (R) announced that the referendum had qualified for the ballot. The veto referendum campaign, Support Our Schools, submitted 86,603 signatures on July 17. At least 61,308 signatures needed to be found valid. The state verified 68,184 signatures and confirmed that the distribution requirement was met in 60 counties.

On July 15, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed Assembly Bill 1955 (AB 1955) into law, which will become effective January 1, 2025. AB 1955 prohibits school districts and charter schools from adopting or enforcing any policy requiring an employee to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This includes parental notification policies requiring school staff and administrators to notify parents if their children request to be referred to by a different name or by different pronouns.
