TIMONIUM — What began as a traffic stop in northern Baltimore County ended in an arrest after state police found multiple suspected drug substances and paraphernalia.

Maryland State Police arrested a Dwayne Purdie Jr. early Sunday morning after uncovering suspected cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms, ecstasy and heroin during a traffic stop in the Timonium area, officials announced July 15.

Purdie, 31, is a Baltimore resident, and is charged with felony drug distribution, two counts of possession with intent to distribute narcotics, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl/heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia, authorities said.

Just before 3:30 a.m. on July 14, a Maryland State Police trooper from the Golden Ring Barrack conducted a traffic stop on a Honda Accord, which was traveling east on the inner loop of Interstate 695 before Green Spring Avenue, "for suspected driving under the influence," says an MSP statement.

Numerous criminal indicators were present during the traffic stop, MSP officials said, leading investigators to conduct a K9 scan on the vehicle. A preliminary investigation indicated that the K9 scan produced a positive alert, state police said.

During the search of the vehicle, troopers located what they suspected to be cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms, ecstasy and heroin.

Following Purdie's arrest, he was transported to Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack, located on Kelso Drive in Essex, for processing. According to MSP officials, Purdie was later transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center where he was seen by a district court commissioner before being released.

"Maryland State Police continue to work in close coordination with local, state, and federal partners to disrupt any criminal enterprises that threaten the citizens of Maryland," says an MSP statement released July 15.

"The investigation is active and ongoing."
