Where to Find March Madness Food and Drink Specials Around Baltimore
At this point, you’ve likely submitted your bracket and placed your bets. Now all that’s left to do is find the perfect place to root for your alma mater. Luckily, there are plenty of local bars with ample big screens that are offering food and drink specials to celebrate a win (or drown your sorrows) during March Madness this year. From burgers and slices to Crushes and beer, here are a few deals that are a slam dunk:
Baltimore’s “Spy Plane” Was Ruled Unconstitutional in 2021. So Why Did One Murder Case Go to Trial Years Later?
This story was produced in partnership with the Garrison Project, an independent, nonpartisan organization addressing the crisis of mass incarceration and policing. Explore more of the project’s coverage, here. Around 10:30 a.m. on May 22, 2020, 60-year-old Steven Lamont Clark Sr. was shot and killed in front of his...
Open & Shut: The Local Fry; B&O Café; Café Poupon
The Local Fry: Big plans are in store for Baltimore’s specialty French-fry bar, best known for its wings, Banh Mis, and, of course, its hefty orders of crispy fries covered in worldly toppings. The spud-centric concept at the Rotunda in Hampden, from owners Kevin and Liz Irish, is slated to open its first franchise in the Northwood Commons development near Morgan State University this year. Kevin tells us that the New Jersey-based franchisee—who is also looking to expand beyond Baltimore with possible locations in Atlanta, Northern Virginia, and New Jersey—aims to open it by the time the new school year begins in August.
The Kenergy Was Strong at Last Night’s Oscar Ceremony
How do you lose the Oscar but win the entire night? Well, Ryan Gosling just gave a masterclass. He was a good sport in the audience, playing along even when host Jimmy Kimmel cracked that he wanted to go camping with him “and not tell our wives.” He acted out a genuinely funny fake feud with Emily Blunt over Barbenheimer (sample joke: “They called it Barbenheimer, not Oppenbarbie because you were riding on our coattails all year.”) And, most of all, he delivered an instantly iconic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”
Irish Pubs to Hit Up for St. Patrick’s Day This Weekend
Any local cafe, restaurant, or bar that you step into this weekend will likely be acknowledging St. Patrick’s Day. After all, Baltimore’s food and drink scene is known for going all out with bar crawls, pints of green beer, and festive food specials (see: the green-and-orange swirled bagels at THB or the shimmery St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes at Cake by Jason) around the big day in mid-March. But if you’re looking to take a more authentic route, you can’t beat a barstool at one of the area’s Irish pubs.
Catalog Coffee Makes a Shiny Debut on The Avenue in Hampden
They say a smile is the universal welcome, and a new coffee shop and cafe in Hampden is putting that to the test. A bright yellow blade sign—one of the only flag mount-style signs on the block—depicting a smiling sun greets customers at Catalog Coffee, which opened its doors at 914 W. 36th St. (adjacent to another newcomer, The Urban Oyster) on Thursday, March 7. Current hours are 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday; and 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Sure Thing! My Final Oscar Predictions
Let me start this by saying I think it’s going to be a good Oscar ceremony. Jimmy Kimmel is hosting and he always does a solid job—it’s like, you can relax, a professional is in charge. The show is bringing back groups of past winners to announce the acting categories, always a nice touch and a way to maximize the star power. And, best of all, Ryan Freaking Gosling will be singing “I’m Just Ken,” which is probably going to add a million viewers on its own.

Open & Shut: The Dugout; Sailor Oyster Bar; Zeke’s Coffee
The Dugout at Peabody Heights: Any Peabody Heights regular will tell you that a highlight of the Waverly brewery is its fairly wide selection of arcade games, from pinball to Ms. Pacman to (this writer’s personal fave) Killer Queen. Now, the brewery is leaning into its love of vintage video games with the opening of The Dugout, a barcade space that’s been built just a few steps away from the main taproom.
Movie Review: Dune: Part Two
I want to start this review by speaking directly to the people who were eagerly looking forward to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. Congratulations. This film is going to exceed your expectations, light up your pleasure sensors, and pretty much blow your minds. As the kids say, you will be fed.
Movie Review: Drive Away Dolls
Many years ago, I did an interview with a lesbian filmmaker who said she couldn’t wait for the day that there were actual options for queer cinema, a time when she could say, “Yeah, I’m not feeling this queer film but that other one playing in the theater next door is right up my alley.”
Movie review: The Taste of Things
Lately, there has been much talk of “love languages,” the preferred ways that people give and receive love. In Tràn Anh Hùng’s sublime The Taste of Things, the preparation of food is the ultimate love language—an act of service that is also a deeply sensual pleasure that requires dedication and precision while simultaneously reminding us of the bittersweet, ephemeral nature of life.
Open & Shut: Limoncello Pizzeria; Mobtown Ballroom & Cafe; Fells Point Tavern
Limoncello Pizzeria: Locust Point residents might remember Limoncello’s pizzas, which became incredibly popular as a takeaway invention during the shutdowns and restrictions of 2020. When the pandemic waned and Limoncello reopened, they were taken off the menu as the spot returned to regular sit-down service. But staffers routinely received feedback that the square slices were sorely missed.
Photos: Bishme Cromartie Debuts Bold, Edgy Fall/Winter Collection at NYFW
On Feb. 13, a snowy afternoon in Manhattan, Baltimore-born designer Bishme Cromartie debuted his fall/winter 2024 collection at New York Fashion Week. In lieu of a traditional runway show, the Project Runway alum presented the new pieces simultaneously—against the backdrop of draped white linens and the soundtrack of high-energy club music in one of the ballrooms at The Ritz-Carlton, Nomad.

Hearty List of Valentine’s Day Dining Deals Around Baltimore
It’s officially the season of romance, and restaurants all over town are pulling out the candlesticks and white linen tablecloths to get in the spirit. Whether you’re looking for a fancy prix-fixe, à la carte specials, or decadent desserts on Feb. 14, the local dining scene is offering an array of festive Valentine’s Day deals to fall in love with.
Non-Cheesy Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day Around Baltimore
Some of us love the Hallmark holiday, while others love to hate it. Either way, Charm City has plenty of inclusive Valentine’s events in store—whether you’re celebrating with your significant other, family members, best pals, furry friends, or you’re flying solo. In fact, Eventbrite recently named Baltimore the most romantic city in America, thanks to our stacked February calendar.
The Night Truman Capote Fell Down at Towson State
For decades John W. Ruark has told the story at cocktail parties: how on a November night in 1977, as a student at what was then Towson State University, he took Truman Capote’s arm and led the inebriated, incoherent, profanity-spewing writer off stage. “Mr. Capote,” he told him, “It’s...
Open & Shut: Costiera; Prim & Proper; Nana
Costiera: You might remember Brian Lavin and Sam White, the hospitality veterans whose culinary adventures in Spain and Europe provided the inspiration for the much-lauded Gnocco in Highlandtown—which closed in 2019. The duo resurfaced this past summer with a new concept, Costiera, holding recurring pop-ups at Southpaw in Fells Point. Now, the Coastal Mediterranean-inspired operation has a brick-and-mortar home of its own.
Movie Review: The Greatest Night in Pop
“We Are the World” is such a staple, such a part of our collective cultural DNA, that it seems as though it arrived fully formed in all its anthemic, cast-of-superstars glory. Of course, that wasn’t the case. Assembling all those pop legends required a herculean effort—and first they had...
