The Arc Baltimore has named Royal Farms its Employer of the Year for 2024, the organization announced June 6.

A prominent and frequented gas station and convenience store known for its food and world-famous chicken, Royal Farms was honored for the pivotal role it has played in fostering inclusive employment opportunities for people supported by The Arc Baltimore, according to the organization’s officials.

“Royal Farms’ unwavering commitment to providing support throughout the employment process — from interviews to onboarding to training — has been commendable,“ said Kathleen McNally Durkin, The Arc Baltimore’s CEO.

“Royal Farms’ personnel have dedicated countless hours to ensure the success of people with disabilities seeking employment.”

By Durkin’s estimation, Royal Farms has opened doors and provided a sense of purpose and belonging to everyone the company has hired while promoting inclusivity within the community by offering competitive job opportunities.

A renowned operator of fast and friendly neighborhood convenience stores with nearly 300 locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Royal Farms opened its first store in Baltimore in 1959.

Individuals supported by The Arc Baltimore currently work at Royal Farms’ locations in Baltimore, Dundalk, Owings Mills, Timonium, and White Marsh.

The Employer of the Year Award was presented to Royal Farms during The Arc Baltimore’s recent Annual Meeting and Awards Reception. The event is an opportunity for the organization to recognize organizations, businesses and individuals who have gone the extra mile in their service to The Arc and those with developmental disabilities who are recipients of its programs and services.

“Royal Farms exemplifies what it means to be an ideal business partner, offering meaningful employment opportunities while fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment for people with developmental disabilities supported by The Arc Baltimore, Durkin added.

“Their steadfast commitment to the success of every employee, from the initial application to ongoing support throughout their employment, underscores the transformative impact of collaboration in building a more inclusive society.”

According to The Arc Baltimore Chief Advancement Officer Christopher Knoerlein, Royal Farms Store No. 311 on Nottingham Drive in White Marsh and Store No. 68 on German Hill Road in Dundalk have successfully hired employees with the support of The Arc Baltimore.

“The gentleman at the Dundalk location, a customer courtesy associate, has been a reliable part of the team for over three years. Similarly, the other gentleman at the White Marsh store has been a consistent presence for over four years,” Knoerlein said.

“Their management team and store managers are committed to hiring people with disabilities and they recognize the value and unique perspective they provide. Ultimately, they know they are getting dedicated employees who are reliable and will benefit their bottom line.”

As in past years, the event featured numerous recognitions, as well as the election of The Arc Baltimore’s new board of directors and officers.

The Arc Baltimore supports people with developmental disabilities — including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities — to lead fulfilling lives with a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaningful relationships.
