Sandy Shifflett, Center Manager for The Arc Baltimore’s Homeland Day Services, is the recipient of the organization’s Stephen H. Morgan Award for Career Excellence for 2024.

Presented during The Arc Baltimore’s recent Annual Meeting and Awards Reception, the Award for Career Excellence is presented annually to The Arc Baltimore employee who has spent at least 25 years of their career at the organization and has shown excellence over that time. The award recipient has exhibited a consistent record of professional growth and advancement, as well as constant dedication to excellence and The Arc’s mission.

“Sandy embodies resilience and dedication in her approach to challenges,” said Kathleen Durkin, CEO of The Arc Baltimore. “Her steadfast mantra, ‘We’ll make it work,’ underscores her unwavering commitment to the people she supports. Skillfully balancing familial concerns with individuals’ capabilities, Sandy fosters community engagement and seizes new opportunities.”

With a history as a Center Manager at Day Services locations in Dundalk and Loch Raven, Shifflett has consistently cultivated partnerships with diverse groups, enhancing experiences for everyone involved. Amid the challenges of the pandemic, she ensured continuity and connection at Homeland Day Services, adapting seamlessly to new norms. And despite facing personal challenges, she remains a driving force, navigating obstacles with determination, bringing out the best in her team, and promoting a culture of learning, fun, and creativity for those she supports.

The Annual Meeting and Awards Reception provides an opportunity for The Arc Baltimore to recognize those individuals who have gone the extra mile in their service to the organization and those people with developmental disabilities who are recipients of The Arc’s programs and services. As in past years, the event featured numerous recognitions, as well as the election of The Arc Baltimore’s new board of directors and officers.

The Arc Baltimore supports people with developmental disabilities (autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability) to lead fulfilling lives with a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaningful relationships. The Arc provides employment training and support, day and residential services, family support and education, treatment foster care, respite care, public policy advocacy, and information and referrals.
