Gio: Orioles have DNA of other teams to torment Yankees in playoffs in recent years

Gio says that right now, after winning another series, the Orioles are simply a better team than the Yankees.

That could change after the trade deadline, but right now, the O’s don’t just look superior, but also seem to have the makeup of teams that have denied the Yanks a deep playoff run in recent years.

“I think about some of these teams that have gotten in the Yankees way or were a thorn in the Yankees side in recent years, and the Orioles fit that same exact profile,” Gio said. “The Astros and the Rays, these are teams that got their own guys, came up through the system, and they didn’t keep all of them, but signed most of them and had this core of their guys that came up through their own system and they weren’t signing a ton of guys from other organizations and there were these groups of young, annoying, really good baseball teams.

“That is exactly what happened to the Orioles. They are in that same situation.”

Gio sees a young core in Baltimore similar to the likes of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Alex Bregman in Houston, which knocked the Yanks out of the ALCS three times since 2017. The likes of Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman could be a problem for the Yankees for years to come, as made clear by the first two head-to-head series with the O’s this year.

“It’s these type of teams that have knocked the Yankees out of the postseason recently,” Gio said. “And you just wonder if the Orioles are the next iteration of all that.”
