Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones died overnight in his sleep, though reports have not yet listed a cause of death.

Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston reported that Jones passed away sometime in the overnight hours between July 13 and July 14. His death was announced early on Sunday, leading to an outpouring of condolences for the 40-year-old.

Jones had no publicly known health issues. It was not immediately clear whether there will be an investigation into his death, or when a cause of death could be announced.

The Ravens announced Jones' death in a statement on Sunday that praised his spirit and love of the game.

"Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day," the Ravens said, via ESPN .

Jones played in the NFL for nine seasons and made history during Baltimore's Super Bowl run in 2012. He scored three postseason touchdowns including what became known as the "Mile High Miracle," a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to tie the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round with 31 seconds remaining.

The Ravens went on to win the game in overtime, advancing to the AFC Championship game. Jones scored twice more in his team's Super Bowl XLVII win over the San Francisco 49ers, becoming the first player in league history to record both a receiving and return touchdown in a Super Bowl.

After his career in the NFL came to an end, Jones moved into coaching and had a series of jobs at the high school and collegiate level before becoming the receivers coach at Alabama State in 2022, Wilson reported. Jones also appeared in the "Dancing With The Stars" television competition in 2023, reaching the finals and finishing in third place.
