Ravens' John Harbaugh makes eye-opening comment about expectations for key receiver

It's shaping up to be a big season for Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman.

The Ravens signed Bateman to a two-year, $12 million extension that he even didn't see coming .

The extension was a bit of a surprise, as Bateman has struggled with injuries and consistency through his first three seasons after being selected with the 27th overall pick in 2021. Bateman has topped 500 receiving yards just once (his rookie year) and has only 4 career touchdowns.

Now, fully healthy and adjusted to the Ravens' offense, Bateman needs to produce more to live up to expectations.

And he is, in fact, facing expectations. Bateman reportedly had a strong practice on Monday at Ravens training camp, making two highlight-reel catches in a rain-soaked practice. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said it was "great" to see Bateman making plays, and that it fired up the team, but that Bateman is expected to be great.

"That's what we expect from Rashod Bateman: he's expected to be a top receiver in the league for us," Harbaugh said. "That's what we're planning on."

The Ravens didn't add any veteran receivers to their team this offseason, meaning it's on players like Bateman and Zay Flowers to make leaps to help elevate the passing game.

Bateman has always impressed teammates and analysts with his talent , but it hasn't translated to the field consistently. With good health, he should be able to easily top his 367 receiving yards from 2023. However, it sounds like there will be some pressure on him to have his best season yet.
