Orioles could add Angels veteran outfielder to 'provide greater balance'

The Baltimore Orioles are doing everything they can to improve their roster before the Major League Baseball trade deadline.

Baltimore has already acquired Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays to bolster its rotation, but the Orioles are still scanning the market for plate production.

Baltimore reportedly had some interest in Tommy Pham of the Chicago White Sox, but Pham was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday afternoon, taking him off the market.

A similar asset to Pham that the Orioles could be pursuing is Kevin Pillar of the Los Angeles Angels. Pillar was mentioned by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal over the weekend as a good fit for Baltimore.

"In the outfield, the Orioles added Cristian Pache in the Hays deal, along with reliever Seranthony Domínguez," Rosenthal said. "Pache is a right-handed hitter, but his career batting average is .179. A role player such as Tommy Pham or Kevin Pillar would help provide greater balance. All of the Orioles’ other outfielders are left-handed except Anthony Santander, a switch-hitter."

Pillar, 35, is slashing .287/ .343/ .481 this season with seven home runs in 181 at bats. He's played for nine teams in his career and would provide valuable experience to an Orioles clubhouse looking to compete for a World Series.
