Baltimore Orioles former second baseman Connor Norby.

The Baltimore Orioles got the starting pitching they needed, although they paid a steep price.

Mark Feinsand from MLB.com reported that the Orioles acquired pitcher Trevor Rogers from the Marlins. In exchange, second baseman/outfielder Connor Norby and outfielder Kyle Stowers are heading to Miami. This is the second trade the Orioles have made to bolster the rotation, adding Zach Eflin on Friday.

Rogers has struggled since his All-Star showing in 2021 and has battled injuries. He posted a 4.53 ERA and a 1.528 WHIP over 105.1 innings with Miami, striking out 85 batters and walking 46. Perhaps the Orioles "overpaid" in trading Norby, their fifth-best prospect per MLB.com, and a previously well-regarded prospect in Stowers.

However, this deal barely touches the talent in the Orioles system. Baltimore was considered to have the best farm system in baseball ahead of the 2024 season, with five top-100 prospects. Three of those prospects — infielder Jackson Holliday, catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo and third baseman Coby Mayo — are still in the system. Outfielders Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad are in the majors and graduated from that list.

The Orioles have been actively improving their pitching staff. If Rogers can return to his previous form, he will be another solid option in a possible playoff rotation. Seranthony Dominguez, acquired on Friday from the Phillies, provides another power arm for the bullpen. Yet, even with those moves, the Orioles have plenty of young talent for any other transactions the front office feels necessary.
