Orioles to promote Coby Mayo, top-15 prospect in MLB
The Baltimore Orioles are expected to call up corner infielder Coby Mayo , a top-3 prospect in the organization and a top-15 prospect across MLB, Orioles beat writer Roch Kubatko of MASN.com first reported Thursday evening.
The organization has not made the news official, nor has he been added to the 40-man roster. Though Baltimore does have an open slot available, meaning no corresponding move has to happen, according to Roster Resource.
Mayo, their fourth-round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, is the No. 3-ranked prospect in their system, according to both Fangraphs and MLB Pipeline ; the former had him as baseball’s 12th-best prospect with the latter having him at No. 15. He’s expected to slot in as the team’s third baseman as a result of Jordan Westburg suffering a fractured wrist earlier in the week.
Mayo, standing at 6-foot-5 with exceptional raw power, has torn up Triple-A Norfolk this season. In 77 games, he’s sported a .301/.375/.586 slash line (.961 OPS; 141 wRC+), recording 22 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs and 61 RBIs. He’s carried a 10.0 walk rate–to a 24.3 strikeout rate–with a 12.1 swing-and-miss rate.
Bleacher Report’s prospect analyst Joel Reuter was dubbed Mayo the organization’s top power-hitting prospect in mid-June. He’s going to be Rule 5 eligible this winter, and with how he’s produced in the minors, one team was almost certainly going to scoop him up.
Over his minor league career, he’s done nothing but hit, carrying a .929 career OPS with 80 home runs and 276 RBIs in four seasons. Where his flaws arise is defensively, where he’s below average. Though if his bat translates, the Orioles could be looking at an everyday middle-of-the-order option alongside Gunnar Henderson on the left side of the infield
