BUENA VISTA − A 50-year-old Bancroft man is dead after a one-vehicle crash early Saturday evening in Portage County.

The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Portage County JJ, about 600 feet south of Coddington Road, in the town of Buena Vista, according to a news release from the Portage County Sheriff's Office.

The initial investigation found that William C. Scarce was driving a 2001 Buick passenger car south on Portage County JJ when he failed to maintain control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the road and overturned several times in a nearby farm field, the release said.

Scarce was ejected from the car and sustained fatal injuries. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Speed, inattentive driving and drug use are being considered as contributing factors in the crash, the release said.

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the crash.

They were assisted at the scene by Portage County Ambulance, Almond EMS and Almond Fire, and the Portage County Medical Examiner’s Office.
