A Liberty man suffered several lacerations and possible internal injuries Sunday morning after he was trapped under a heavy work vehicle, according to local Fire Chief Bill Gillespie.
The man, who is in his 80s, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Gillespie did not know his condition as of Monday. The man had reportedly been using a skid steer with a fork attachment to lift a load of wood that was too large for the vehicle, resulting in him getting bucked out of the machine, according to Gillespie. The vehicle then appeared to have driven over the man and trapped him in place, until a neighbor found him and called the authorities shortly before noon. The incident reportedly happened in the vicinity of Main Street and Tannery Lane.
The vehicle was no longer running when members of Liberty Fire & Rescue and other agencies arrived. They used extrication equipment to slide the man out from beneath it. The rescue workers could detect no visible injuries to the man’s legs, but he had suspected internal injuries, pressure wounds and noticeable lacerations to his head and arms, according to Gillespie. “If you have anybody who has that type of equipment sitting on them, we want to make sure we get them to a trauma center,” Gillespie said.
