The bridge carrying Interstate 95 between Maine and New Hampshire has reopened after a police shooting there early Thursday morning.

The Piscataqua River Bridge reopened to both north- and southbound traffic after 9:30 a.m., according to the Maine State Police.

Northbound traffic from New Hampshire was completely blocked, while southbound traffic was being diverted at exit 2.

The Piscataqua River Bridge connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Kittery, Maine. Between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, with higher traffic volumes during peak periods, according to Paul Merrill, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Transportation.

That closure came after a man, whose identity hasn’t been released, allegedly killed a woman in Troy, New Hampshire, overnight before driving to the bridge, according to the New Hampshire attorney general’s office.

He was shot and killed during an engagement with police. The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Neither the Maine nor New Hampshire attorney general’s office provided additional details when reached Thursday.

New Hampshire-based News 9 crew said they heard what sounded like gunshots on the bridge around 4:50 a.m.

Police also found an 8-year-old child had been fatally shot inside the man’s vehicle, the New Hampshire attorney general’s office said Thursday morning.

    The shooting remains under investigation.

No additional information was immediately available.

Authorities planned to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. at the Kittery Police Department.
