A man was airlifted to a Bangor hospital after an early Sunday morning crash in Unity.

He was driving on Main Street about 3:55 a.m. when the crash happened, Detective Brad Hanson of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened near the Unity House of Pizza on Main Street, also known as Route 202.

It took rescuers nearly an hour and a half to free him from the wreckage, according to the Unity Fire Department.

Hanson said the man, whose identity wasn’t released, was airlifted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries considered life-threatening.

He was the vehicle’s only occupant, according to Hanson.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
