Bangor veterans awarded Quilts of Valor at Independence Day celebration

BANGOR, Wis. (WKBT) -- Bangor's American Legion hosted its annual Independence Day celebration Thursday. While families gathered to enjoy good food and fun, a special ceremony served as a reminder of what the Fourth of July is all about.

The celebration was held at Bangor's Veterans Memorial Park and included a trout fishing contest and a bags tournament.

While the park was buzzing with activities, attendees took a moment to pause for the midafternoon Quilts of Valor presentation.

Quilts of Valor is a national project that awards quilts to active service members and veterans.

"The veterans often say it's the only time they've been thanked for their service or that it helps them heal," said Karen Demaree, the Quilts of Valor Foundation's Wisconsin and North Central Region coordinator. "Those suffering with PTSD often find that just wrapping themselves in the quilt is like wrapping themselves in a hug."

Three local veterans were awarded the quilts: Clifford Maas and Ron Kaiser, both Army veterans who served during the Vietnam War, and Luke Seielstad, who served in the Marine Corps from 2003-2005 as an Infantryman.

"It was fantastic to be honored today, especially this being my hometown community," Seielstad said.

"It was just great," added Sgt. Kaiser. "It's really nice to get veterans connected ... it lets you know somebody that's been through the same thing that you have."

It's not lost on them that the presentation fell on Independence Day, a day with extra meaning for those who fought to keep our country free.

"To be honored on the 4th of July, especially by my hometown community is just a really great thing. It's a great thing knowing that my friends and neighbors are all here," Seielstad said.
