VIRGINIA—The American Legion Post 239 baseball team took on Barnum/Moose Lake/ Willow River on Monday night, on Frandsen Bank & Trust Field in Virginia.

Post 239 couldn’t get anything going on offense and picked up too many errors on defense and that led to a 8-2 Barnum/ML/WR win.

“We just couldn’t pick up a big hit when we needed one,” Coach Jamie Lindseth said. “We had our chances but just couldn’t get it done.”

Will Kemp started on the mound for Post 239.

He shut them down without giving up a run in the two innings while striking out four.

Post 239 could not get anything going against Barnum/ML/WR starter Tyler Juhl either.

Barnum/ML/WR opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning when Layne Radzak reached on an error, went to second on a ground out, third on a Post 239 error, and in to score when Landon Oeherer also reached on an infield error.

Barnum/ML/WR added to the lead when Joey Steen ripped a single that scored two runs to make it a 3-0 contest.

“That inning really hurt us,” Lindseth said. “You have to make plays and we just didn’t get it done.”

Post 239 got a hit from Joey Aho but that would be it in the inning.

Barnum/ML/WR added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Radzak hit a single, went to second when Reese Bode walked, and both came in to score when Oeherer hit a double down the right field line that scored both runners.

All of a sudden it was a 5-0 Barnum/ML/WR lead.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Reid hit a triple in the left field gap.

But Juhl got Post 239 to go out without getting him across the plate.

“That was another chance for us right there,” Lindseth said.

Post 239 finally picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Logan DeLeon and Bennett Simon both singled.

They then each stole a base and got some runs in when Harley Mott singled.

Post 239 trailed 5-2 at the end of the fifth inning and that would be enough for Kemp on the mound.

“He pitched a great game,” Lindseth said. “He tossed 107 pitches and 80 of them were strikes. I’m proud of him.”

Mott came in to pitch in relief.

Barnum/ML/WR picked up three runs in the top of the sixth inning when Bode, Juhl, and Oeherer all singled.

PJ Frisch then knocked in a pair with a single of his own.

Owen Peterson then knocked in the final run of the game for Barnum/ML/WR when he hit a single.

Post 239 had two at-bats remaining but just couldn’t get anything else going off Juhl.

“I think we know what we have to do out there,” Lindseth said. “You can’t play like we did today and expect to win many games.”
