Retired Educators set annual summer picnic
The Barron County Retired Educators will hold its annual summer picnic on Thursday, July 18, with visiting beginning at 4 p.m. and a picnic meal served at 5 p.m. This event will be held at John and Kathy Osterloth’s home at 1005 Linden Ave., Rice Lake. Brats, condiments, buns, water, lemonade and eating ware will be provided. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass and any special refreshments for themselves. Any who are thinking about joining the organization are invited to attend and enjoy a meal and camaraderie. BCREA supports anyone who has worked in education, including all support staff, teachers and administrators from any county, state, or country. Ninth annual Cops and Robbers Donut Dash 5K July 20
The ninth annual Cops and Robbers Donut Dash is set for July 20 at the Barron County Fairgrounds, 101 Short St., Rice Lake. The Donut Dash raises funds for the Law Enforcement Foundation of Barron County's Shop with a Cop program. Shop with a Cop partners a law enforcement officer with children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Barron County and Cumberland Kinship to go gift shopping for their families during the holidays. Online registration for Donut Dash 5-kilometer run or walk is available through Sunday by visiting donutdash2024.itemorder.com. Race day registration will occur from 7-8 a.m. at the fairgrounds. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Race bag and T-shirt pick-up is also July 18 and 19 from noon to 6 p.m. at the fair booth for the Barron County Sheriff's Department. Rice Lake Man Facing Indictment By US Attorney Office For Barron Drug Bust
BARRON COUNTY (DrydenWire) - A Rice Lake, WI man is facing indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for a Barron County Drug Unit drug bust in April 2024 that led to the seizure of over 200 grams of methamphetamine. According to a press release from the Barron County Sheriff's Office, David Anderson, 33, a resident of Rice Lake, was apprehended on Friday, April 19, 2024, following the issuance of a search warrant at his residence.

Grandpa dies saving grandkid from drowning in western Wisconsin, sheriff says
BARRON COUNTY, Wis. — Authorities in western Wisconsin say a man died trying to save his grandchild from drowning on Saturday.The Barron County Sheriff's Office says it received a report of a man who went into the water below the Mikana Dam to help a struggling child. The child safely got out of the water, but the man did not return.Upon arrival, responders searched the area for the man but were unsuccessful. The Mikana Dam was closed as the search continued. Eventually, a dive team found and recovered the man.Investigators say the 71-year-old man had taken his two grandchildren fishing and swimming in the area. Both kids had been wearing lifejackets when one of them began to struggle. Their grandfather went into the water, got them to where they could stand again and the children made it back to shore.The sheriff's office says that for an unknown reason, the man went underwater and drowned.The incident remains under investigation.
