Democrat publisher wins international award
Cassville Democrat Publisher Kyle Troutman, speaking, traveled to Toronto Metropolitan University on Saturday to accept a Golden Dozen award from the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors, an organization headquartered in Joplin and to which Troutman belongs. The award recognized Troutman as in the top 12 of nearly 100 entries of editorials and columns among ISWNE members, which number 251 across eight countries. The column Troutman submitted to the contest was the Sept. 19, 2023, piece entitled “A time to collaborate” (https://www.cassville-democrat. com/2023/09/19/a-time-to-collaborate/), which addressed the initial Citizens for Justice — Barry County community meeting held the week prior. “I am incredibly elated, honored and humbled to win a second Golden Dozen award in three years, and I could not be happier to represent Cassville and Barry County on such an international stage,” Troutman said. “This organization is filled with so many experienced and inspirational journalists, and I am extremely humbled to be counted among them. I also want to thank the Cassville and Barry County communities for their support and their readership.” Troutman was one of three winners from Missouri, as colleague Dan Wehmer, publisher of the Webster County Citizen, was a Golden Dozen winner, and Amanda Mendez, publisher of the Howell County News, won the overall first place Golden Quill award. Former Missouri teacher’s aide charged in federal court with child sex crimes
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A former southwest Missouri teacher’s aide is now charged in federal court for possessing child pornography. Makensie Koehler, 33, worked as a teacher’s aide for the Cassville School District and resigned in March 2024, around the same time the Barry County Sheriff’s Office began investigating her.

Purdy Community Picnic and Fireworks Show coming up. The Purdy Community Picnic and Fireworks Show will be held July 3 at The Gathering Place in Purdy, located at 100 Old Bus. 37 and Hwy. C, beginning at 6 p.m. There will be a picnic meal, live musical entertainment, and a fireworks show at dark. People may bring lawn chairs and join the community for a great time.
