News 12 has obtained exclusive witness video showing the tense moments that led up to a man being shot and injured by police in the small Sullivan County hamlet of Barryville. The video shows police surrounding a slow-moving, red SUV on Route 97 Tuesday. It also has the sound of two shots as the vehicle is seen speeding up. State police say the driver, 63-year-old Paul Gosselin, of Augusta, Maine, threatened to shoot troopers and tried to run over a local peace officer when they opened fire. Gosselin was shot once, according to police, who say he’s in stable condition. Town Supervisor John Pizzolato says he called police for help after encountering Gosselin the parking lot of his taco restaurant down the street. “I approached the car and asked what I could help him with,” says Pizzolato. “The first thing he asked is if I had a gun. I said, 'No, Do you?'” News 12 has confirmed with police in Maine that Gosselin was reported missing on Monday by a person who said he could be a danger to himself and others. “I knew something was off with this guy,” Pizzolato says. People in the quiet vacation community on the Delaware River say they’re traumatized by the ordeal. “You wonder if he wanted to die,” says John Giannotta. “It’s just terrible.” State police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the Middletown Barracks at 845-344-5300.
