A "zero tolerance" campaign to crack down on illegal fireworks use ahead of Independence Day is underway across the High Desert, authorities have announced.

All fireworks, including those labeled "safe and sane," are illegal throughout High Desert cities and unincorporated areas, with the exceptions of Adelanto and Barstow, where "safe and sane" fireworks are permitted.

With triple-digit temperatures expected well through the weekend, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies will continue cracking down on illegal fireworks use through Sunday, according to the agency.

"Those found in violation will be cited and face the maximum penalties allowed by law," sheriff's officials said in a written statement . "Additionally, if a person causes a fire as a result of using fireworks, they will face criminal charges and be liable for any damages caused by the fire."

In addition to presenting dangers of fires and burns, fireworks can cause significant stress for military veterans and animals, sheriff's officials said.

High temperatures around 107 degrees are predicted in Victorville on Independence Day, followed by highs of 110 degrees on Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Illegal fireworks can be reported to Sheriff's Dispatch at (760) 956-5001, or anonymously to the We-Tip hotline at (800) 472-7766.
