The Barstow Humane Society is asking the public's help in finding a burglar who broke into the nonprofit's animal shelter this week, ransacking the facility and stealing donations, representatives said.
The break-in took place shortly before 11 p.m. Monday at the shelter, 2480 East Main St., according to the organization.
Surveillance camera footage shows an intruder, who carried bolt cutters and wore a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
The burglar first tried to force open a side door to the shelter, Barstow Humane Society representatives said in a written statement.
"Once that wasn’t successful, the person went to the front door," the statement said. The glass door was smashed.
"Two rooms were trashed," according to the statement. "(The burglar) broke into our donation jar."
Officials said a cash register was also forced open, but it contained no money.
No animals were harmed or taken, for which shelter representatives said they were grateful.
"It will cost a lot to replace the glass of our front door. We know this because of the (last) time we were broken into when COVID first started," the statement said. "This is so sad and it will set us back to get the door repaired and take away from the (animals)."
The shelter asked anyone with information to come forward.
"We would be lying if we said this didn’t matter and we will move on, but it does matter," according to the statement. "It’s sad that someone felt the need to prey on a non profit animal shelter. We don’t feel safe."
