Colles to give Santa Fe Trail program in Great Bend
The Barton County Historical Society and the Quivira Chapter Santa Fe Trail Association, in a joint meeting, will host Britt and Linda Colle for the June program at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 24 in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the historical society, 85 S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend. Admission is $5, while members and those under 16 are free. Memberships may be purchased at the door that night.
Jobless rate is up in Barton County and across the region
TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in May. This is an increase from 2.8% in April and an increase from 2.6% in May 2023, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, June 18 shows continuing slow improvement in drought conditions overall for the state. Our area is predominantly in moderate drought with a small area of severe drought to our west in Ruch County and a sliver in northwest Barton County. This doesn’t reflect the rains occurring Tuesday. The six to ten-day outlook (June 25 to 29) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% of leaning to above normal precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 27 to July 3) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal precipitation. A great forecast for wheat harvest overall but not for summer crops, especially soybeans and alfalfa.

This year's Barton County Fair will again feature three nights of music for a variety of tastes. Rock tribute bands Revelation and Get Lucky will perform the classics from Journey and Loverboy on Friday, June 28. Great Bend native Jadynce Jean, coming off the recent release of her first single, "Little Miss Perfect," will provide country music on Saturday, June 29. Barton County Fair Association President Charles Atkinson is pleased to have a local artist on the stage.

Lightning believed to have started hay bale fire in Barton Co.
On Wednesday, June 19, at approximately 1 a.m., the Great Bend Fire Department responded to the report of a hay bale on fire near Southeast 20 Road and Southeast 30 Avenue in rural Barton County. Crews arrived to find a large stack of hay fully involved in fire. Crews quickly determined that the approximately 250 bales of hay were a total loss.
