Family Crisis Center in search of funds after drastic cut to federal grant
Public taxing entities are preparing their budgets for next year. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission heard from several outside agencies that are requesting funds for next year's budgets. Kylee Graves, executive director at the Family Crisis Center in Great Bend, said she has never had to ask local governments for help funding her agency in the past.

Barton Co. Health Dept. taking lab services to Expo II Thursday morning
An Expo II building full of commercial exhibitors is expected at the Barton County Fair from June 27-29. A special guest Thursday morning will be staff from the Barton County Health Department as part of the Be Well Barton County Health Fair. Health Department Director Karen Winkelman said lab services will be offered from 7:30 to 9 a.m. that morning.
Barton Co. Clerk: Special session in Topeka resulting in paperwork delays
A decision out of the Kansas state legislature's special session on June 18 was good for taxpayers, but not necessarily good for taxing entities and county clerks across the state. As taxing entities work to finalize budgets for next year, an increase to the school tax exemption from $42,049 to $75,000 was passed last Tuesday. Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said that information was not made available to clerk's offices that send out the paperwork for those budgets until several days later.
Barton Commission approves design work on bridge east of Great Bend
The Walnut and Dry Walnut Creeks wind their way across Northeast 20 Avenue approximately one mile east of the 24th and Frey Street intersection in Great Bend. The result is two small bridges on the gravel road. Tuesday morning, Barton County Engineer Barry McManaman approached the county commission for approval to begin the replacement of Off-System Bridge No. 189.
Great Bend man convicted of counts of felony criminal threat
From the Barton County Attorney's Office... Tuesday morning a Barton County jury convicted Aaron Keith Fuller of two counts of felony Criminal Threat. Monday morning the parties picked a jury and then in the afternoon the State of Kansas presented its evidence and then rested. Tuesday morning the defendant testified and was followed by closing arguments to the jury.
June 25 proclaimed as Great Bend Bat Cats Day ahead of Eagle Radio Night
It's Eagle Radio Night on Great Bend Bat Cats Day. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission proclaimed June 25, 2024, as Bat Cats Day ahead of the baseball team's home game against the Kansas Cannons. This year's roster features 27 players from Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesota, and Kansas. Bat Cats Coach and Manager Roger Ward called it his best group yet.
Barton Commission extends appraiser contract through 2025
Barton County Appraiser Wendy Prosser will remain in her post for at least another year. She was elevated from interim county appraiser on July 1, 2021, in a contract that was designed to be for four years to align with most other counties in the state. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission approved an employment agreement that will extend her contract to June 30, 2025. County Counselor Patrick Hoffman explained the issue to the board.
