County, local BOCES to receive Juul settlement funds
TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — Tompkins County and area educational organizations are set to receive $657,313 from a multi-state settlement payout from the e-cigarette company Juul Labs. The funds must be used for programs to reduce or deter youth e-cigarette use, research into such programs or enforcement of anti-vaping regulations.
Tompkins County Emergency service center got a record number of calls Monday
The Tompkins County Emergency Communications Center had what it believes to be the highest volume of calls in a single day on Monday, July 15, due to severe storms. The center said in a Thursday statement that the vast majority of calls received by the center from the afternoon through the late evening on July 15 were for trees and wires down, as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area, producing heavy rain and high winds.

United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC) announced their list of community members recognized for their contributions on Monday. United Way takes note of positions in the community who go above and beyond for Tompkins County by taking part in UWTC activities. Elmira Pioneers earn walk-off win over Niagara
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Elmira Pioneers saved the best for last Thursday night. Elmira scored the game-winning run in walk-off fashion at Dunn Field beating Niagara 13-12. In a wild back-and-forth game, Matt Leahy delivered an RBI single for the decisive game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth as the Pioneers remained in third place in the PGCBL West.
Horseheads Village Fire Department in Need of Repairs, Upgrades
HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- A facility study of the Horseheads Village Fire Department shows the building is in need of significant repairs and improvements. The results of the facility study on the fire department, conducted by Hunt Engineers, Architects & Surveyors, was presented to the Horseheads Village Board of Trustees Thursday evening. The study found the fire department building was in need of mostly structural and architectural repairs. However, some other components are not up to current code standards, and would need to be updated.
