While the Boston Celtics reign supreme as one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, Bill Russell , the linchpin of their success, once offered a humbling perspective.

According to the 11-time NBA Champion, the true essence of just why the franchise was more special than any other team was because of Walter Brown, Red Auerbach, and Bob Cousy . Accoring to Bill, the trio all played instrumental roles in elevating the Celtics to unparalleled heights.

Bill on who made the Celtics special

During an interview with Charlie Rose, when asked whether the Celtics were truly special or merely akin to any other team, the 6’10” center delivered a prompt response in an instant.

"Really special," Russell said . "Three guys were responsible for that. Walter Brown, the original owner of the Celtics, Red Auerbach, and Bob Cousy. I know when I went there, those three guys were, 'We're really glad you're here, and anything we can do to help you, we’ll do it. Don't hesitate to ask.'"

Bill had high praise for his point guard

In particular, reflecting on his time together with Cousy, Russell labeled him as a ‘near-perfect teammate.’ The 12-time All-Star added how even at the time he entered the league with considerable media hype, Bob greeted him with warmth, despite being the existing star and the face of the team.

"Within a month - I joined the team in midseason - he was collaborating with me," Russell added. "For example, one of the things I was best at - I approached the game from defense first, then offense - I would get a rebound, and Cousy would say, 'Instead of looking for me, I'll be over here, so you don't have to look for me.' I could pass the ball before I landed."

Bill's leadership shines brightly in this particular instance. Despite being the defensive force that put the Celtics in the best position to win numerous titles and adeptly addressing team needs, he humbly steered the spotlight away from himself. The 1--time champion was all abouy making sure all the others get the recognition they deserved.
