Now that the 2024 Olympics has concluded in the city of lights, all eyes are on the 2028 Olympics happening on American soil, specifically in Los Angeles. The United States men’s basketball team will compete for their sixth straight gold medal, but the biggest question is, who will be on that team? With LeBron James , Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry currently in the twilight years of their career, it’s fair to think that their Olympic stint in Paris was their last.

Like the current state of the NBA, Team USA managing director Grant Hill will have to find new faces to headline the program. Hill, who played a massive role in assembling the 2024 Team USA roster, has four years to do it, and the good news for him is that he has a long list of candidates.

The beginning of a new era

With the expectation that James, Curry, and Durant won’t be in the picture, the potential players that will remain on the 2028 team could just be Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton, and Devin Booker. While these names alone already make up a pretty good squad, Hill still has to do a lot of recruiting in the next four years.

Hill could tap into new names: Paolo Banchero, Jaylen Brown, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Ja Morant , and Tyrese Maxey. So much can happen in the next four years, like a lotto draft pick blooming right away, akin to what happened to Edwards. Perhaps Cooper Flagg might already be in consideration as well. Ultimately, what’s certain is that there will be many new faces playing for Team USA in 2028.

    Some program changes too

Aside from the players, it also seems like Team USA will have a new coach, as Steve Kerr has been hinting for a while now that he plans to step down after the Paris Olympics. The ideal candidate to take Kerr’s place is reportedly Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra , his assistant in this tournament.

It will be interesting to see the state of the USA men’s basketball program in the next four years. They proved this year that they’re still a tier or two above their opponents, but that doesn’t mean their competitors aren’t getting better. Unlike their opponents, though, they have the most available basketball talent on their home soil. It’s going to be about bringing them all together.
