Robert Horry takes a subtle shot at Lakers fans for linking every star to the team: "At some point of time down the line, it's going to be Wemby"

The Los Angeles Lakers has one of the most passionate fanbases in the NBA. Considering the organization has 17 NBA Championship banners hanging in the rafters, fans expect the Purple and Gold to compete for a title every season.

Evidently, the Lakers need star players on the roster to have a shot at doing so. While many teams trust in nurturing talent from the NBA draft, the Lakers have used the free agency to add talented stars to the franchise.

As a result, the fanbase tends to link every star player disgruntled or available on the market being connected to the team. A perfect example of this was when former Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson tested free agency earlier in the offseason .

7x NBA champion predicts which star will be linked to the Lakers next

Robert Horry, who won three NBA Championships with the Purple and Gold, recently called out the fanbase. He pointed out that if Victor Wembanyama expresses some discomfort or fails to win a ring in the coming years with the San Antonio Spurs, he will be linked to the Lakers.

"You always hear anybody that the next star, regardless of who they are is always going to be connected to the Lakers," Horry said on Big Shot Bob podcast (transcribed via Kens5). "Like you said, we talked about it with Giannis a few years ago. Now it's Luka's turn. At some point of time down the line, hell, it's going to be Wemby.

"Give it two, three seasons especially if the Spurs aren't doing anything or Wemby may not be 'happy', you going to see his name connected to the Lakers. All in on Wemby."

Horry didn't mince his words when making his point clear. Before signing a supermax extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo was viewed as a top target for the Lakers in 2020. Ultimately, the move never had any weight, and Giannis not only stayed with the organization but led them to an NBA Championship in 2021.

The Lakers were recently linked to Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic is currently one of the top players in the league. He is also coming off his first NBA Finals appearance, which resulted in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics. Many believe that if Doncic doesn't win a title with the Mavs soon, he could seek a move away from the team. As expected, it was recently reported that the Lakers have their eyes set on Luka .

As per the report, the 17-time NBA champions view Doncic as a replacement for LeBron James once the legendary forward decides to hang his sneakers. Considering Bron is still an elite star in the Association, by the time he decides to retire, Horry's prediction may turn out true.

Does Wembanyama to the Purple and Gold sound like a possible move? As of now, there is no confirmation of this. But it won't be a surprise if Wemby to Lakers rumors catch some fire as the 7'4" spends more time in the league.
