Shaq's advice to Luka Doncic on managing a possible $500M NBA contract: "Just defer it to when I'm done playing"

The NBA is growing at a breathtaking rate and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Evidently, this has led to bigger and better contracts for the league's top stars. The dynamic duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum signed deals worth more than $300 million each with the Boston Celtics.

However, their behemoth contracts will end up looking small in comparison to what the Dallas Mavericks can offer to their superstar, Luka Doncic . Doncic previously signed a five-year, $215 million rookie contract extension with the Mavs.

His current contract runs through 2027 if he exercises the player option in the final year. When it's time for another extension, the Mavericks star could land a massive five-year deal worth $500 million.

NBA legend offers financial advice to Doncic

Shaquille O’Neal is known for building an impressive business portfolio since retiring from the league. He is one of the few players from his generation who has found a way to multiply his net worth rather than blowing it for short-term enjoyment.

The retired center wants the Slovenian star to have the Mavericks add a special clause in his future deal, which he shared in a recent episode of the Pat McAfee show.

“Luka is about to get $100 million, If I was him, I would say, ‘Okay, just pay me $20 million this year and defer that $80 million, just defer it to when I’m done playing,’” Shaq said . “Because you know that $80 million is not gonna be $80 million after taxes. Just pay me $20 million, and the other $80 million after taxes just put it away. I don’t wanna see it till I’m 35.”

It’s sound advice from the Los Angeles Lakers legend. After all, O’Neal learned the value of money the hard way. During the start of his career, Shaq was a reckless spender, once spending $1 million in just 30 minutes .

Can Doncic earn $100 million per year?

The league signed an 11-year agreement with Disney, Amazon, and Comcast earlier this year. It will bring approximately $76 billion to the Association until the deal is all said and done. Evidently, it means the top stars in the league will surely benefit from it.

Doncic's status as a perennial NBA All-Star and fan-favorite superstar makes him an ideal candidate for the league’s first massive contract, which would allow him to earn $100 million per year.

As per a report by Wall Street Journal , the NBA’s salary cap is expected to be well over $350 million by 2025. Keeping that in mind, if Doncic gets 35% of the cap space by the time his new extension is signed, he can make it to triple-digit millions per year with the organization.

The report also predicts that Luka Magic could surpass $1 billion in career salary earnings, exceeding the combined NBA earnings of legends Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
