"I did not enjoy it" - Bob Myers says he had the "biggest migraine headache" of his life after winning 2018 Finals

Winning comes at a price, and Bob Myer s learned that the hard way.

Speaking at the CNBC x Boardroom's "Game Plan," the former Golden State Warriors general manager said being part of the dynasty was not all butterflies and roses. In fact, Myers revealed he had the worst migraine of his life after getting the job done in the 2018 NBA Finals.

"I was in our hotel room, and it was three in the morning, and I had the worst, and it was because I was so stressed because we had this team that was so good that we had to win, and I did not enjoy it," the 49-year-old said .

    Stepping down as Warriors GM

Myers' revelation puts everything in perspective. Dub Nation has just swept LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but instead of being happy with another triumph, the architect of one of the greatest rosters ever was down and out. The burden of expectation became too overwhelming, sapping the joy of winning. Five years and one championship later, Bob stepped down as the Warriors GM.

"I was done. I just couldn't do it... I care too much to not give my best," Myers remarked.

What Myers meant by "he couldn't it" was regarding Klay Thompson and his contract talks with the team. He saw the writing on the wall and decided he wouldn't be the one to break up the very thing he started.

On ESPN's NBA Countdown before the 2023-2024 season started, Myers admitted it's impossible not to get emotionally attached to what you're doing.

"Well, this is why I left, first of all," said Myers as he discussed Thompson's contract situation. "A lot of times people will say it's just business, but this is not a just business situation. There is going to be a statue of this player outside of Chase Center. He was instrumental in bringing four championships, he's beloved inside the organization, with the fanbase."

Roughly a year later, the 2011 eleventh-overall pick is now a Dallas Maverick.

    Myers' impact on the Warriors

All the on-court greatness aside, the Warriors wouldn't have become one of the greatest dynasties ever without Bob, who took over the team's GM duties in 2012. He drafted Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green that year and acquired veterans Andre Iguodala, Leandro Barbosa, and Shaun Livingston at different points.

Moreover, the former UCLA Bruin made the critical decision to hire Steve Kerr despite Mark Jackson's popularity in the locker room. All these moves laid the foundation for the Warriors' iconic run.

Of course, Myers' biggest free-agent acquisition was Kevin Durant in the summer of 2017. While that development took all the fun and parity in the league, it resulted in two more rings for the franchise.

Unbeknownst to all, it also gave the two-time Executive of the Year a literal headache, showing that the cost of glory is sometimes paid in more than just dollars.
