NBA players are often some of the wealthiest people in society, and this financial status can lead to a more relaxed attitude toward money. This was certainly the case for Dennis Schröder when he found himself in a bizarre situation in 2017.

After hopping off the German national team bus, the point guard accidentally left behind a bag containing an impressive €21,000—equivalent to $23,277. The incident raised quite a few eyebrows; however, Dennis's reaction was surprisingly laid-back.

"Things like that happen. It was my own mistake," remarked Schröder, per Bild.

    Cash conundrum

Aside from the fact that Schröder was so forgetful, many might wonder why he would even carry such a large amount of cash, more than what some people earn in half a year.

Well, at that time, the NBA player was competing with Team Germany in EuroBasket across several countries. The incident happened during their stop in Tel Aviv, Israel, where Dennis wanted to treat his teammates to dinner. Nevertheless, it's unclear why he opted for cash instead of simply using his card.

Reflecting on the situation, the then-23-year-old playmaker fared relatively well. After an hour and a half, his bag was found and returned to the hotel, though it was missing 500 euros. When asked about this, Schröder simply stated, "I don't feel robbed."

Ultimately, the incident didn't tarnish his experience abroad, as 'The Menace' remarked, "Tel Aviv was still great; everyone was very welcoming."

    Schröder's redemption arc

Unfortunately for Schröder, this wasn't the only time he let a significant amount of money—albeit only briefly—slip through his fingers.

A few years later, the Braunschweig native found himself at the center of one of the biggest contract blunders in NBA history. During the 2020-21 season, he excelled for the Purple and Gold, averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists. The guard's strong performance prompted the Lakers to offer a reported extension of up to $84 million over four years. However, Dennis declined this offer only to later sign a one-year deal with the Celtics for $5.9 million.

However, it appears that the 2013 draft pick has genuinely learned from his past experiences. While Dennis was often viewed as an ego-driven player who was tough to coach early in his basketball career, 'The Menace' has truly matured.

This change was most evident during Team Germany's remarkable gold medal victory at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Schröder, clearly the standout player for Germany, set an example and brought 'Die Mannschaft' together like a true leader.

Now 30 years old and having joined the Brooklyn Nets in February, Dennis seems to have embraced a calmer, scandal-free lifestyle as a family man. He has been married to his wife, Ellen, since July 2019, and together they have three children.
